Edmund Kemper – “I never Promised you a Rose Garden”

Kemper is known for his intricately crafted and exceptionally beautiful mugs. He handcrafted the mug on the below photo for his psychiatrist Dr. William Schanberger. The projects took almost a year to complete.

The semi-autobiographical account “I never promised you a Rose Garden” by Joanne Greenberg, which she initially penned under the name Hannah Green, was first published on June 28, 1964. Kemper killed his grandparents on August 27, 1964. Whether Kemper ever read the book is unclear, since the quote on the mug, “I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden” stems from a 60’s pop song, which we’ll take a look at further below.
There are yet a few obvious parallels between Kemper and the character Deborah (Latin for “pain“) in Greenberg’s story. Both Kemper and Greenberg increasingly withdrew into their fantasy worlds, Kemper
